International Schools Diploma adapt to Group 1 and 2 curriculum changes

Every five years, the IB curriculum review of each of the six groups of subjects. This time, however, the latest revision of group 1 and 2 subjects had taken a little longer because the IB is recognized that many students in our community have profiles very complex language, and many are bilingual and multilingual often. Therefore, in the recent curriculum revision, all the language courses have changed significant in an effort to meet the needs of our international student body.

As part of its Language and Literature studies (Group 1) students can now choose to study literature and / or Language Arts. The main objectives of these courses is to "introduce students to a wide range of texts and authors from different eras, styles and genres, development of students' energy of expression and critical analysis, both oral and written communication, and promote the students' enjoyment and interest in life, language and literature. "These two courses are designed for native speakers they are able to understand and analyze the complex nuances of the language course and have been able to study this language in an academic context. The expectations of language use, the level of analysis and critical reflection are the same for all languages ??courses. A The language courses are available at the Superior and Standard.

The language of a literature course encourages students to appreciate literature and develop a capacity to critically reflect on their reading through the study of a wide range of literary texts. As indicated in the new curriculum guidelines, this course is the theme through which policy IB mother tongue right to delivery. This means that every student should have the opportunity to study their native language at this level.

The language course Language and Literature is a new course aims to develop in students the ability to textual analysis and literary texts. In this course students will be encouraged to focus closely in the language of the texts to study and become aware of the role of broader context of each text. The course is divided into four equal parts: the language in cultural context, language and Mass Communication, Literature: texts and context, and literature: critical study.

Students at Southbank have the opportunity to study these languages ??for a group theme / s: Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

To get a bilingual diploma, students can follow two paths: a) take two courses or a group, since English is the language of instruction for all other subjects, have a group of courses in a language other than English.

The two groups or courses Language Acquisition have also undergone substantial changes. There are two types of language learning courses: Speech Language ab initio and B. These two courses are very dynamic and are designed to provide students with the skills and intercultural understanding to enable them to communicate with success and explore the culture of the target language. Understanding between cultures is an important element of cohesion of the curriculum in all languages ??in group 2 and added to the international dimension of the IB programs.

The Language from the start is an introductory course organized around three themes: the individual and society leisure and work, and urban and rural environment. The aim of this course is to equip students to respond and interact appropriately in a wide range of everyday situations in an environment where the language is spoken. Ab initio Each course has a specific program language. This course is only available at Level.

Language B is a language learning course designed for students with previous experience of learning the target language. The aim of this course is language acquisition and development language skills. Develop language skills through the study and use of a wide range of written and spoken. This course is offered at Superior and Standard level. The difference between HL and SL is the depth of analysis of the program, the study of literature, which is now mandatory in the NS and the level of difficulty evaluation purposes.

The curriculum for courses in language B and ab initio offer the opportunity to enjoy stimulating, creative and intellectual. Topics studied were chosen for their relevance to students' lives. Course, in the form of supervised written work, is an evaluation of all new courses Group 2.

To meet the requirements of the IB Diploma students must study at least one group of two language courses, unless they have taken two courses in Group 1. Students also have the option to choose a study group of second year of 2 instead of a Group 6 (art) subject.

In my opinion, the courses language and new options in the Group 1 and 2 provide a more balanced and more comprehensive for our students. I am pleased that the IB continues to recognize the language learning as a crucial element in the academic and cultural life of a young person to keep it in the heart of the target = "_blank" title = "Diploma Programme"> Diploma Programme.
