Study Abroad – UBC Florence, Italy?

My family is Italian, but I speak some Italian. However, I have visited many times (from Canada) and I really want to live there for a year to immerse myself in their language and culture and hopefully understand fluently by the time I leave. I would like to study at UBC in Vancouver, Canada (most likely law or science) and I hope to study abroad in Italy at some point, but I have some questions … 1. Is study abroad possible for these English courses in Italy? 2. If I were to, it would be best done before the start of the UBC, or just take a year sabbatical at UBC half of my studies to go to Italy? Thank you!
