The Russian River Valley Wine Country
The Russian River Valley (RRV) offers many treasures including world-class vineyards and wineries, majestic redwoods, restaurants, bed and breakfast inns, scenic roads and bike paths, golf, fishing, swiming, canoeing, and the magnificent Pacific coastline.
RRV is in Sonoma County, about 60 miles north of San Francisco, and strecthes from the town of Healdsburg south and west to the Pacific Ocean. Other towns in the region include Sebastopol, Graton, Guerneville, Forestville, and Windsor.
Russian River Valley was approved as an AVA (American Viticultural Area) in 1983, a designation which makes it a distinct appellation and grape growing region. There is also a very highly regarded sub-appellation known as Green Valley within the RRV AVA. Wine lovers flock to the region to visit its many world-renown vineyards, wineries, tasting rooms, and restaurants.
Some of the top wineries include Martinelli, Gary Farrell, Rochioli, DuMol, Hartford Court, Dutton Goldfield, Sebastopol Vineyards, Paul Hobbs Winery, and dozens more. RRV is primary known for growing world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel grapes, and making award winning wines from these varietals. Syrah is also a flourishing varietal grown in the Russian River Valley.
Top restaurants in RRV include Applewood Inn, Farmhouse Restaurant and Inn, Corks at Russian River Vineyards, Mosaic, Underwood Bar and Bistro, Zazu and Mirepoix.
Besides being a destination for wine lovers, families come during the summer months and enjoy fishing, swiming and canoeing on the second largest river, after the Sacramento River, in the nine counties just north of San Francisco.
