I don’t know about the K12 curriculum, however, I have a friend who is learning mandarin chinese and it is very important to know that you really don’t learn how to read and write it UNTIL you have learned how to listen and speak it. The reason is that it is such a different language and is not written as we traditionally write or read English, so it is almost useless to start with this method. It really is a type of language that you should join a group or take classes for because you can’t just “read and write” chinese without knowledge of the spoken language first. Hope this helps.
