Is Granada a safe enough place for a female sole traveler?
I am 23 and want to study spanish abroad and have chosen granada. As it appeals to me most and I have found a school I like carmen de las cuevas. I just wanted know if it is safe and friendly, and of course if there are any great places to meet people and socialize? help would be great! cheers.
Studies in Granada for 5 months at the Centro de Las Lenguas Modernas (in the Realejo district). Was an awesome experience!
Granada is definitely safe (used to walk alone at 3-4 even 5 in the morning, no problem). Friends did the same (both female and male).
The good thing about it is that there are people on the street at all hours of day and night, so you feel safe amongst the crowd.
The only shifty suburb is around the estacion de autobus, and only maybe when you’re walking alone in the middle of the night, not during the day (there’s a good market there which we went to every week).
So no, it’s not unsafe at all!
It’s a student city, so you’ll definitely be meeting a LOT of people and socializing like never before!
)) it’s their lifestyle.
One thing I would say, though, is that Carmen de las Cuevas is little hard to get to, because its in the Albaicin district, which goes uphill, with lots of curvy little streets, so you’ll be getting some good excercise while travelling to and from the school ;o) maybe take some flamenco classes while you’re there too (it’s known to be a good flamenco school).
So happy for you that you’re going there! I could definitely say that living in Granada was the BEST experience of my life!
Regarding the gypsies (people always saying to keep away from them) – not true. Albaicin is a gypsy district, by the way, and you’ll meet some of the most talented and nicest people you’ve ever met in your life.
