Montreal for English Speakers?
I am currently a high school senior, and have been looking at several different universities, one being McGill because of its reputation and low cost. I know that Montreal, where it is located, and Quebec in general use French as their primary language, and while I am taking one year of French this year (I know this won’t be adequate), I was wondering if it would be sufficient for me to subsist there and maintain a social life with less than stellar French skills.
I want to learn the language of course, and assume it would be easier being surrounded by the culture, but I need to know I will fit in for those first few awkward months where I know little french. McGill’s instruction is in English, by the way.
Thank you so much
No I am not Canadian, although I have some friends up in Ontario, I would be applying as an “international” student.
Montreal is entirely bilingual, and McGill is an English university. You won’t have any trouble with studies, social life or general day-to-day stuff, but you will have trouble finding a job and possibly negotiating Government agencies until you improve your French skills.
