italian school system
how does the italian school system work ?

what i am meaning is that in england we have gcse & A-levels but what do the italians have

Ok, let me tell you about the italian school system from the very start; I don’t know if it’s very different from the english system, since I don’t know much about it ^^.
Here kids start going to school when they’re six; they attend 5 years of elementary school (“scuola elementare”) and then go to middle school (“scuola media”) without taking any exam (there used to be one, but it was recently abolished). Middle school lasts 3 years, and at the end there is an exam you have to pass. This exam is both written and oral: kids have to write a composition, solve math problems, and prepare a little thesis of history and geography. Then, if they pass the exam, they start high school (“scuola superiore”) which generally lasts 5 years. In any case, kids here must study only until they’re 16, so it’s not mandatory to finish high school. After 5 years, kids (who should by now be 18/19) take the dreaded “esame di maturità”, a final exam which tests their knowledge on all the subjects. The final mark must be 60/100 or higher to pass.
After that, there’s university. University courses can last 5 years, 3 years or 3+2 years; there are exams every semester and, in the end, the discussion of the thesis; this and the marks in the exams determine the final degree mark.
I hope that was useful, let me know if you need any more info :)
