Chinese foods in China are very different. Many dishes taste a lot better there. There are so many tasty dishes to choose from. I think you should worry about gaining weight instead.

Depending on which part of China are you visiting, the experience could vary quite dramatically. If you are visiting Hong Kong, there is very little to worry. Plenty of western foods are available there. If you do a little searching, you can find very authentic western foods in Hong Kong. But, I don’t recommend wasting your time on western foods in Hong Kong though. There are too many tasty things out there waiting to be discovered.

Mainland China would be a little different. Finding Chinese foods that you couldn’t even recognize is pretty easy there. But, do not worry. A lot of them are very tasty. But if you insist on western foods, then things will be different. The first time I stayed in mainland China for over 30 days, I was hurting for bread and toast. There were plenty of bread in China but most of them don’t taste the same. Dinner rolls are acceptable at most places though. There were plenty of American fast food places; I found many them to be disappointing and some of them could even be offensive. Staying with Chinese foods tend to be a little safer. LOL

Foods to try:

Pretty much all duck dishes I tried are very good.
BBQ pork regardless of the style are very good.
Soup noodles – There were sooo many different kinds of soup noodles available and many of them are very good.
Tofu – There is a dazzling selection of tofu. Many of them are very good.
Squab/quail/doves – Two thumbs up for those.
Shrimp – Many shrimp dishes are very good.
Wonton soup – There are quite a few different styles of wonton soups available.
Steamed buns – There were so many different kinds of steamed buns available. Some of them are excellent.
Chinese pancakes/tortilla/pupusas – There is a dazzling variety and many of them are great.

Western foods in mainland China:

There are plenty of Mc Donalds in China – French fries and soft drinks are okay. Chicken nuggets are acceptable. But other items on the menu will taste different. You will also find items that are not available on American menu; those are VERY oriental. :)

There are also plenty of KFCs in China – Biscuits, corn, mashed potatoes, and gravy are all okay. But the recipe for the chicken is different. The texture of the chicken is also different. Not the same, but acceptable.

Pizza Huts are also available – The crust is not the same. The cheese combination is not the same. The combination of spices is not the same. Salad dressings, except vinegar and oil, taste Oriental. But, if you are really hurting, pepperoni pizzas are okay. Just pretend it’s not Pizza Hut and things will suddenly become a lot better. By the way, there’s always an extra HUGE line outside Pizza Huts. I’ll let to decide if it is worth the wait.

TGI Fridays are available – The differences are not as obvious and they are still acceptable as long as you stay with regular items.

Hard Rock Cafe – Do except to find some minor differences. Again, if you want to play safe, stay with regular menu items.

Steaks – Be careful with a lot of steak places. If you don’t see many western faces, RUN!!!

Churrasco – Yes, you could find churrasco in China too. They tend to overcook their meat (an easy problem to solve) and the taste is not as authentic. But, churrascos in China aren’t bad at all.

Starbucks – You won’t have too much trouble there.

PS: Pretty much all mainland Chinese in the US I ran into hate Panda Express. The general response I got from them – They would eat there only if there is an emergency.
