french course in brussels
Translation rates- what should I say?

I’ve been asked by a company if I want to be put on their freelance database and to provide my rates. I don’t know what to charge and how much information I need to provide them with.

To give you an idea-

It will be Spanish to English translation.
I am a Spanish and French student at Lancaster University, 3rd year.
I have some experience, 6 weeks this summer in a Real Estate company as well as part of my course.
I am going to be studying translation this year in Brussels and hope to do an MA in Legal Translation when I have finished my degree.

Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

- The average rate is 15 to 25 cents a word (depending on the type of document to be translated, the language combination, the amount of work involved, the subject matter and the deadline).
– Charge more for technical translations and urgent jobs.
– Premiums should be charged on rush jobs (few cents more per word).
– Charge by the hour for revision (the average rate is about 30 to 50 dollars per hour). But if you perfer by word, the average revision rates by the word is 4 to 5 cents a word.
– If you decide to work on your own and if you are just starting out you may consider charging on the lower end, to help you get your foot in the door.
