Your Guide To Visiting Amalfi

If you plan to get to Amalfi by car then you are in for a visual treat. You wil be entranced by the incredible views of the azure blue ocean and rugged coastline as you travel along the winding roads. I went to amalfi via a bus and this afforded me the luxury to take in all the views.

However if you are driving yourself you would be wise to keep your eye on the road. You see the roads are perched on the very edges of the high cliffs. They are quite narrow roads, with a surprisingly small barrier between the road and fresh air. This is more memorable if you are a passenger on a high bus as it can appear that you are hanging over the edge of the cliffs at times. If you don't scare easily then this is a pretty memorable introduction to the Amalfi coastline.

The region of Campania is a popular vacation spot and has been popular for many Europeans for well over two centuries. It was first popularised in the English speaking world when English tourists visited in the 1920's. The area has two principal towns to visit, Amalfi and Positano. They are fairly close together and a 15 minute bus trip will get you to and from Each venue.

Amalfi is noted as being a port town and does not have a recognized beach as such. It does have a rather spectacular and lively town center instead. The hub of activity in the town has to be the cathedral or Duomo di Amalfi. This is a baroque styled building which sits atop of the Piazza Duomo. The piazza has many interesting shops that seel trinkets and tourist souvenirs plus a few cafes and restaurants. It is an ideal location to have some coffee or even take an alfresco meal in one of the local tavernas. The dominate feature of the square is the long, sweeping stairway that joins the Duomo to the Piazza. Many a holiday snap is taken on these stairs.

The uniques specialties of the region are easy to find in shops and eateries in the town. You want to get yourself a bottle of limoncello liqueur if you can. This is a lemon flavored alcoholic drink that is unique to the area and is made from the juicy lemons that come from the region.

Amalfi is a must see town and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you fancy a beach day or vacation then check out Positano. Positano beach is made up of pebbles so you may be disappointed if you are used to fine sand, however the sea is a welcoming blue and you can spend a few hours relaxing on the beach. There are all sorts of restaurants and eateries along the coastline that will cater for most tastes. In order to get to the beach you have to walk through the town that is a procession of quaint and modern buildings. When you are on the beach you can look up at all the colorful buildings and this is the classic photograph of the region that you are bound to see on countless postcards of the region.

On your trip to and from Positano, don't be surprised to see people working on the olive trees. Olive trees grow all over the countryside and don't be surprised to see people harvesting the olive fruit.
